Benefits of Joint Collaboration

1. KDNet Online Information System and Services

KDNet members can benefit from the comprehensive Online Information System with sample applications, training materials for data analysis, technical reports, vendor guides, news & events calendar, thematical links, etc.

2. Creating Synergies and Collaboration through Networking

Interest group meetings and practical events are regularly on the agenda and can be every time proposed by the KDNet Members.

(Information Dissemination) News and events can be online pushed on the KDNet information portal. Network members will be automatically subscribed to the mailing lists relevant to their field of interest, but they can also subscribe to other mailing lists available.

Companies participating in KDNet can profit from case studies, company profiles, vendor's guides, as well as from contacts to research institutes, the public sector institutions, and other companies active in different knowledge discovery sectors. Not all training materials will be available free of charge for Non-Members.

3. eEurope and Community added value

The IST programme implements many aspects of the eEurope initiative which plays an important role in the agenda of the European Commission. Related to this are other European initiatives such as Government Online, eContent, eCommerce. There is a fortitudinous conjunction with the agenda of the Knowledge Discovery Network and the EC-objective of a successful implementation of eEurope. The eEurope initiative in many respects presupposes the successful application of KD-techniques. Thus Knowledge Discovery is an enabling technology for eEurope.

The network supports the European Research Area (ERA) project in many obvious ways, specifically
  • improving the performance of European research
  • transfer and take-up of knowledge
  • increasing trans-frontier mobility, developing European careers
  • improvement of knowledge, avoiding fragmentation
  • strengthening of the research workers' mobility
  • encouragement of the Science-Industry dialogue.
Network activities enable providing information both on industrial applications of KDD workshops and on emerging scientific trends, the Knowledge Discovery Network in taking into account the IST Integrated Programme Portfolio Analysis IPPA recommendation to strengthen the 10year perspective of European IT research while not losing sight of commercial applications in the 3-5 years range. Timely information on cutting-edge research topics will help decision makers in industry, public sector and European institutions to asses the potential and risks of new technologies properly, thus strengthening European competitiveness in many areas.

The KDNet is an open Network. Any interested European and Non-European research or commercial organization can apply to become a member of this community. For further information, please contact the KDNet Office.

4. European added value

Clearly, the requirements for eEurope cannot be properly addressed on a national level:
  • a national initiative could not easily address research topics which are important from a multi-national European perspective, e.g. multilingual Text-Mining
  • a national network could not represent the European Knowledge Discovery community as whole
  • contact to industry would have to be on a national level and could not properly address the European market
  • national initiatives without a European counter-part lead to fragmentation.
A key function of the Knowledge Discovery Net will be to provide a common perspective on European Knowledge Discovery activities. The European commission benefits from this project since it gets a first hand account on how Knowledge Discovery can support and push forward European initiatives. Directly targeting the needs of the European Commission would be impossible in a national project.

5. Expected Benefits for Stakeholders

The Knowledge Discovery Network will strengthen the European and worldwide competitiveness in Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery. The project supports EU policies directed towards SME’s and includes Small and Medium Sized Enterprises active in the Data Mining market.

The network is expected to have many benefits for a large variety of international stakeholders :

Stakeholder Benefits
Citizens More human-centred information technology, more easy-to-live world in which information is accessible to every single individual
Europe Strengthening the European position in a highly competitive market
Strengthening research in Europe
Industry & the public sector Matches state-of-the-art scientific approaches to commercially relevant problems
Early access to research results of high potential economic relevance
Research community Supporting international co-operation among research institutions
Interdisciplinary collaboration
European commission Complementary and integrating activity to other 6FP action lines
Contact point for Knowledge Discovery
Strengthening of European Research Area
