WP 2: Trends in KD Research

For WP2 an internal draft of the Technical Roadmap has been worked on to. After the Management Board meeting in Torino, Italy on 17.05.2003, the different tasks for finalizing the technical Roadmap have been assigned to the management delegates. The first version of the technical roadmap will be published mid/end of July 2003.

The main objectives of the Technical Roadmap for Knowledge Discovery methods, technologies and applications are:

  • Identifying emerging trends and research objectives for KD
  • Providing scientific & technology roadmap/publishing
  • Representation of sub-communities, e.g. forums and SIGs
  • Encouraging workshops on emerging topics

Currently, the basic structure of the roadmap has been completed. Starting from the roadmap produced inside the MLNet, the new one has been thoroughly changed: whereas the old one was organized according to ML/DM tasks and methods, the new one is organized according to broad domains of application.

Structure of the Technical Roadmap:

    Knowledge Discovery for individual persons
    • KD for the individual include all types of tasks that can help single citizens to perform their work better and/or to improve their quality of life. Visions: Ambient Intelligence, intelligent multimodal interfaces
    Knowledge Discovery for society
    • KD for the society includes all tasks of public relevance in the new in formation society, such as health, environment, digital libraries, e-commerce, e-government.
    Knowledge Discovery for industry
    • KD for the industry includes all data warehousing applications to improve effectiveness and sustainability of development in production and marketing.

Responsible for the WP 2: Trends in Research are:
Chair: Lorenza Saitta, Univ. Del Piemonte Orientale, Italy
Co-Chair: Heikki Mannila and Jaakko Hollmen, Helsinki Univ. of Technology, Finland
