WP 5: Training

The objective of the training & research work package is:

  • to provide an introduction to Knowledge Discovery adapted for students
  • to provide an introduction to Knowledge Discovery approaches, applications and success stories for the industry
  • to issue training materials on relevant statistical methods (e.g. time-series, sensitivity analysis)
  • to use that information in the workshops (WP6-8)
  • to design a generic curriculum on Knowledge Discovery to support unification of the field and to make it easier to integrate Knowledge Discovery topics in future curricula.

The KD training & research section includes resource databases relevant to the excellence of the research work in KDNet, e.g.

  • software and data set collections
  • training materials for KD
  • KD glossary
  • download area for presentations and articles

Responsible for the work package training is in full University of Dortmund (Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik).

WP 5 has started with the results of MLnet II's training work package. The InfoLayer software is used to automatically translate content structured by an ontology from the XML formalism to HTML pages. Furthermore, the InfoLayer allows editors to do all necessary changes to the content. The software had to be adjusted to meet the requirements of KDNet. First of all a feature was added for automatic generation of a glossary from all the content stored in the training server. To support publishing of course material, the editor functionality was extended with file upload capabilities. Finally the login mechanism to InfoLayer's editor was refined in a way that access rights to the literature and course materials section can be restricted.

The ontology that has been used for MLNet.org (training materials) needed several adjustments to meet the requirements of KDNet. Currently, there is a special focus on literature and lecture nodes. The software supports several European languages, so it is possible to provide various translations for definitions.

The look and feel of the KDNet Online Information System has been adapted for the training server. After extending the infrastructure, the content of the MLnet II training server has been migrated to the new platform, as a starting point for further work. The InfoLayer has been extended by modules for automatic glossary generation, file upload, and logins with restricted access rights.
