WP 7: Public Sector

Recently the University of Bari contributed to the organization of a KDNet Workshop in the Public Sector as a satellite event of the European conference on KDD (ECML 03), since when the decision was taken it was already too late to organize a big event by KDNet itself. The specific sector chosen for the workshop was Dissemination of Public Data. Therefore a proposal of the workshop on the topic Mining Official Data was prepared and submitted for approval to the PKDD Workshop Chair last February 2002. Upon acceptance (March 2002) a website for the workshop was prepared (http://www.di.uniba.it/~malerba/activities/mod02/index.html), a call for paper was distributed, submitted paper were collected and reviewed also with the contribution of AIS, and proceedings were prepared (they are publicly available in the workshop website). The event took place in Helsinki, in August 20, 2002. Two experts, one from EUROSTAT and another from the University of Paris Dauphine, were invited to the workshop. The latter was financially supported by KDNet while the former was supported by the University of Bari. After the workshop, contributions have been selected and reviewed for a special issue of the Intelligent Data Analysis journal, which will be published in 2003.

Following the KDNet meeting in Helsinki, it has been decided to prepare a KDNet symposium on the Knowledge Discovery for the Public Sector. The symposium should be structured as a cluster of four full-day workshops on the following topics:

  • Mining Official Data
  • Knowledge Discovery for Environment Management
  • Knowledge Discovery for Health Care
  • Knowledge Discovery for eGovernment

These topics are indeed considered relevant for the Public Sector. Each workshop should contain research-oriented presentations of projects and applications. The organization of a demo exposition is also desirable. AIS contributed to the identification of interested people and to the management of logistical problems, since the symposium is expected to take place in Bonn in 2004.
